He was preceded in death by his parents, Elgie and Ruby (Goddard) McClanahan, and two brothers, Grover and Nathan McClanahan, all of Danese, West Virginia.
Stirley was born the son of a coal miner on October 10, 1947, on Backus Mountain, West Virginia. During a twenty-one year career with General Motors in Flint, Michigan, he received his Journeyman’s Card specializing in skilled trades as a certified tool and die maker and master machinist. He won awards for suggestions in safety protocol and was fortunate to retire early with a deferred pension plan at the age of 39.
He and his wife, Brenda, relocated to Greers Ferry, Arkansas in 1987 where he gained approval from the Army Corp of Engineers for his blue print plans to build individual covered boat docks on the lake.
Stirley’s accomplishments were numerous and many were self-taught. He was a Master Mason of Sam Williams Lodge #89, a certified heating and air installer, a self-trained electrician, carpenter, welder, construction foreman, and business owner. He was also CPR certified and a male vocalist for the gospel quartet, Ozark Messengers. Stirley was truly a jack-of-all trades.
He loved his wife and family deeply. He enjoyed gun trading, coin collecting, collecting antiques, and traveling the country in his R.V. He and his wife lived in Arkansas and wintered in Florida. He was a member of West Side First Baptist Church.
