On July 21, 1997, in Aurora, Illinois, Mellisa Carol‑Lynn Matlock arrived as a small but brilliant spark—one that grew into a life filled with laughter, love, and a strength that inspired everyone who knew her.

Her family knew early on that her time here might be short, but Mellisa never let that shape the way she lived. She carried a bright spirit, a quick sense of humor, and a determination that made every day feel meaningful. To her, life was never about counting days—it was about filling them with purpose, connection, and warmth.

Greeting Mellisa at the Gates of Heaven were her grandfather, Richard Hickman, her aunt, Carol Lynn  Wagner, and her beloved dog, Bentley James, who surely ran straight into her arms.

Family was the center of Mellisa’s world. She treasured time with her parents, Scott and Nan Bykowski, and her brothers and sisters—Sonya Bykowski, Cody Wetherington, Brandon Matinkoski and his wife Katrina, and Brittany Anne‑Marie Etter. Becoming an aunt to Brittany’s girls was one of her greatest joys. She adored Rosealy and Jada Marie, embracing her “Auntie” role with pride and delight.

Mellisa also cherished her extended family—her grandmother, Judy Hickman; her aunts, Linda Ward, Valerie (Mike) Murders, Stacie (Kevin) Vaughan, Ashley (Mitch) Rodgers, and Shelley (Homer) Scott ; and more cousins than she could count. They were not just relatives, but friends she chose to keep close throughout her life.

Faith shaped Mellisa from a young age. Growing up at Pangburn First Baptist Church, she learned early what it meant to love people the way Jesus did. That deep faith became the foundation of her joy—giving her the ability to love with her whole heart and to live each day fully, bravely, and gratefully. She shared the gospel on mission trips to Kansas, and Super Summer was the highlight of her year. 

Sports came naturally to Mellisa. She began on the t‑ball fields as a toddler and eventually found her stride in softball, where she truly excelled. In 8th grade, she was invited to join the Pangburn High School softball team, holding down third base with grit and confidence. As #17, she helped lead her team to the state championships playoffs  and still holds the record for the most wins during her time as a Pangburn Tiger. During those years, she formed a meaningful bond with her mentor, Teressa Means, who remained an important part of her life. Mellisa graduated with honors in 2015, carrying friendships and memories from Pangburn well into adulthood.

From the time she could crawl, Mellisa loved animals. So it was no surprise when she enrolled in the Veterinary Technician Program at Arkansas State University. Graduating in 2021 was one of her proudest accomplishments—she had dreamed her whole life of caring for animals, and she made that dream real. After graduation, she worked at Pine Street Animal Clinic in Cabot, Arkansas, where she poured her heart into every animal she treated.

If you ever met Mellisa, you know she had a gift for putting people at ease. Her quick wit, gentle warmth, and bright spirit made her unforgettable. She showed up for others with sincerity and strength, offering comfort, humor, and companionship exactly when it was needed most.

Mellisa was also surrounded by friends who became family in the truest sense. Bridget House was someone she admired deeply—a guiding presence whose encouragement and steady wisdom shaped Mellisa’s life. With Melissa Cook, her next‑door neighbor turned “mom by proxy,” Mellisa shared years of playful mischief, heartfelt talks, and a friendship rooted in trust and affection. And Jerry Thiesse brought lightness into her days, always ready with a joke or a silly moment that lifted her spirit. These relationships were anchors for Mellisa, each offering connection, comfort, and unwavering support.

Mellisa reminded those around her to slow down, to notice the good, and to treasure the small moments that make life sweet. Her words say it best: “Healing comes in so many different ways. Just try not to forget all the little things to be thankful for—they may just be bigger than you know .” 

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many people who walked beside her throughout her life. Your prayers, encouragement, laughter, and kindness lifted her in ways words can barely capture. Whether you supported her during difficult seasons or shared in her happiest moments, you were part of the brightness she carried so beautifully. The family finds comfort in knowing Mellisa’s life was surrounded by people who cherished her just as deeply as she cherished them.

A Celebration of Life for Mellisa will be held on Saturday, August 15th at the Pangburn Performing Arts Building, 1100 Short Street, Pangburn, Arkansas 72121. Family and friends are invited for visitation and viewing at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service officiated by John Hill at 2:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life will continue at 3:00 p.m., honoring Mellisa’s beautiful spirit and the joy she brought to everyone who knew her. 

Guests are encouraged to wear bright colors to the service.
