James Leroy Townsend Obituary

James (Jim) Townsend passed away March 21, 2025, after a short illness.

Jim was born November 16, 1929, to George Norwood and Mattie (Bunch) Townsend in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis and earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University Fullerton.

Jim joined the Air Force in 1950, serving in the Korean War. Upon his return home, he obtained his private pilot license and embarked on a lifelong adventure of flying. His love of flying took him to many unique locations - whether flying to Alaska, or “navi-guessing” around the Australian Outback - there were also a few bumps and bruises along the way when Mother Nature (or the mechanical Gods) didn’t want to cooperate. He also loved the opportunity to sail, including owning a sailboat to enjoy Greers Ferry Lake for a short time.

He met and married his Travel Companion, Linda Yount, in California in 1962, which gave them both the opportunity to see more of the country than most. Daughter, Beth, soon joined them in the back seat of the plane, then son, Scott, as they flew around the country.

After raising the kids, Jim broadened his horizons and with Linda, travelled the world, visiting many countries on six continents.

Jim is survived by his wife and travel companion of 62 years, Linda, daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Brian Curran, son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Colleen Townsend and grandchildren, Kathryn, Liam, and Nolan. He was preceded in death by many family cats, who will be more than happy to see him!

Jim requested no service be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Heber Springs Humane Society.
