Gary Paul Jones, age 84, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away April 25, 2025 in his home on the river. He was born July 27, 1940 in Wade, Oklahoma to the late Kenneth Byron and Eula Mae Buford Jones.
Gary was known to most as G'Pa Jones. He lived a life of service to his country and his faith. He served his country for 22 years in the US Navy. He was an aviation mechanic aboard several different aircraft carriers and served during the Vietnam War.
After retiring from the Navy, he and his wife moved to Heber Springs, Arkansas where they built their home together with the help of their family. They eventually found a church home at Sugarloaf Baptist. As the church grew, a new sanctuary was needed and a building crew from Mobile, Alabama came to help.
Upon completion of the sanctuary, he and his wife felt the calling for mission work. They joined the Mobile Baptist Builders as members of the saw crew and kitchen brigade. They traveled to many states, sometimes more than once to help churches build and expand their ministry. He built churches in Washington, New York, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Maine and Idaho. He and his wife loved traveling together, building churches and doing God's work.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; brothers, Randy Jones and Michael Jones; sister-in-law, Mary Jones; and brother-in-law, James Newell.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Cyndie Blair of Southaven, MS; son, Aaron (Sherrie) Jones of Atoka, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Bonnie and Darryl Schmier; Erick Blair Jr and Heather Blair Hicks; four great-grandchildren, William David Cambell III (known as Trey), Alex Blair, Landon Blair and Tristan Hicks; two brothers, Ken (Sonia) Jones of Phoenix, Arizona and Roger Jones of Bakersfield, California; one sister, Sandra Newell Dills (Tom) of Alton, Missouri; and one sister-in-law, Donna Jones of Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas. He will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
