Thomas Barnum Smith of Heber Springs was born February 1, 1916, at Prim, Arkansas, and passed away on October 9, 2010, at Southridge Village Retirement Center. He was 94 years old. Barnum was the son of J.E. Smith and Carry Ila Barnum Smith.
Barnum was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Buena Turney and Willie May Osborne.
Barnum is survived by his wife of 70 years, Avis Amanda Hazlewood Smith; three sons, Roger G. Smith (Tommie Sue) and David B. Smith (Kay) of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and Douglas B. Smith (Margaret) of Conway, Arkansas; one daughter, Carolyn A. Whitehurst (Donald) of Pine Snag, Arkansas; and six granddaughters, Suzanne Harris, Melanie Whitehurst, Amanda Stephens, Karey Tapley, Stacy Moore, and Heather Porter; three step-granchildren, Kacie Gulledge, Chad Belcher, and Russell Hanna; seven great-randchildren, Zackery Harris, Maci Stephens, Jacob Tapley, Caleb Tapley, Camie Moore, Kinley Moore, and Eden Porter; six step-great grandchildren, Paige Hanna, Payton Hanna, Logan Jones, Landon Jones, Patrick Stephens, and Blake Belcher; one brother, Oscar Smith, and four sisters, Louise Smith, Ruth Hipp, Ora Lee Hipp, and Ruby Stark.
As a young man, Barnum taught school in Cleburne and Stone Counties and he retired as a ranger from the Arkansas Forestry Service. He was a farmer and raised chickens. Barnum attended Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Heber Springs Funeral Home with Elder John Cooper officiating. Interment was in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Visitation is October 11, 2010 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Pallbearers: Gary Hipp, Wendell Hipp, Willie Morgan, Frank Rivers, Clifton Stark, and Jeff Smith. Honorary Pallbearer: Bob Everett.
