James Crawford (Red) Berry, age 90, Heber Springs, Arkansas, peacefully passed away at home on May 6, 2010, in the company of his loving wife and son. Red was born in Evening Shade, Arkansas, on December 26, 1919 and was preceded in death by parents, Johnny “Bud” Berry and Artie Cathey Berry; a brother Allen and sister Mabel Howard. Red is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Vera Lonon Berry and son James M. “Mike” Berry of Fort Collins, CO. Red survived the Great Depression and World War II; he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression and with the US Army in North Africa and Europe during the War. In the course of his life, he plowed Tool House Bottom on the Strawberry River in Sharp County Arkansas behind a mule, saw men walk on the moon and helped build Arkansas Nuclear 1 power plant. He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic and member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 382B. A private, family memorial service will be held at a later date.
